Chapter Eleven

Having Zai confirm my worst fears gave me a blended emotion of anger and disappointment. Even after Yular made it clear the day before that Zai and Ven had lied to me, I was still hoping that it didn’t mean that Zai was the Void Fae. Sure, I had a dream where some ethereal spirit told me to stay by the Void Fae, and that was all well and good, but I had a real-life dad, and family, and draconic lineage to uphold, and all of those things told me to kill the Void Fae. I figured that there might be able to find a way to spare Zai if he was just harboring the Void Fae, or if he knew more than he was letting on, but I had no idea how I was going to deal with knowing he was the one I was here to find and eliminate.

In all honesty, I shouldn’t even leave this cave without killing him.

That, I planned to write off as a need for backup. Zai had turned into something I’d never seen before, and he nearly ripped my wings right out of my back. I planned to give my body a full check for scales and hopefully find some time to head to an abandoned wooded area and make sure I could still fully transform. I was mostly healed already, and I didn’t feel like, if I tried to transform, I’d be hindered from doing that, but I needed some time to test it out. If Zai had really sapped any of my energy from me, that was going to make this entire situation twice as bad.

“Shayne?” Zai asked me quietly. “You haven’t said anything at all in like five minutes and I’m a little worried about that.”

“I’m not sure what you want me to say,” I told him. “I guess I’m just processing.”

“I get that. It took me quite a bit of time to process. In fact, I’m still processing,” he responded.

“So… you were the guy who stood in the middle of all the fae or whatever and the signature appeared on your back?” I asked.

He nodded. “Yeah. I heard this really insane voice. My parents had told me how the ceremony was supposed to go, and it didn’t really go like that for me at all. I guess it’s probably a good thing that Ven was there. He was the only one who had the frame of mind to actually run when it happened.”

As he told the story, I could hear Yular telling me her account of it. She’d said that there had been a human there somehow who took the Void Fae and left. Ven was that human. “And you haven’t been back to the Fae territory since then?”

“Um…” He frowned. “I guess I did go back just once for the High Fae to tell me that she wanted me to kill myself for the greater good.”

My stomach bottomed out. “She really asked that of you?”

“Ah,” Ven said, “if you’re shocked about that, then you’ll be even more surprised to learn that he agreed.
